'Woman of Distinction' Nomination, Crompond School Science Fair, Presidential Scholar and More

Here are five things you need to know today, Jan. 26.

 

1. Amanda E. Borok -- Presidential Scholar at Clarkson University

Congratulations to Amanda E. Borok of Yorktown Heights who was named a Presidential Scholar for the fall 2011 semester at Clarkson University. Borok is a freshman majoring in engineering studies. Presidential Scholars must achieve a minimum 3.80 grade-point average and carry at least 14 credit hours.

2. Crompond School Science Fair

The Crompond Science Fair Family Night is tonight at 6:30 p.m. when fifth grade students will be presenting their projects. On Friday, they will have another opportunity to share them with third grade students.

3. Kathy Quinn Nominated for "Women of Distinction" Award

Town board members have nominated Kathy Quinn, executive director of Support Connection, for Sen. Greg Ball's "Women of Distinction" award. Yorktown supervisor Michael Grace said the choice was rather difficult because there were many other good candidates. 

4. Welcome New Blogger -- Jamie Sirkin

Welcome to Jamie Sirkin, director of Summer Trails Day Camp, who is our newest blogger on Yorktown Patch. In her first blog post she talks about the "Guidelines in Choosing the Right Summer Camp." Click on her hyperlinked name to read more. 

5. Winning Winter Whiskers

February kicks off beard season for Hudson Valley Hospital Center with the first Winning Winter Whiskers fundraising campaign. The challenge to men: Grow your beard out during the month of February and raise money for the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Participant information packets can be downloaded at www.hvhc.org, and applications must be submitted by Feb. 1.
