Go Green Before Selling

Going green can often help sell a home more quickly.

Many households still tend to shy away from adopting green living habits for fear they’ll be too hard, time-consuming, or expensive. In reality, there are many green habits that are easy, inexpensive, and will help you sell your home faster. Cutting down on energy usage is often a great way to save money. Do you know that many buyers today will ask a seller how much they pay each month on their utilities? Some might even go so far as to ask for copies of the homeowners utility bills. In order to make this often large amount of money seem more reasonable, going green can help. Consider “greening” up your appliances. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, getting rid of old and outdated appliances can save thousands of dollars per…

Indian Point Debate: Battle Between Jobs and Safety

The public duked it out at Thursday night's long and heated forum surrounding the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's annual assessment of Indian Point.

Eleven thousand jobs created by a power plant. Eighteen million lives affected in the New York metro area by its demise. Those were the main numbers the protestors – of which there were many at Thursday night's annual public hearing on Indian Point – were throwing around. The protestors were louder, or least more organized, than the pro-nuclear folks. They were also more colorful. There were the Angry Grannies with their purposely frumpy clothes and song (a gimmick, admitted one, but anything to get the message heard). Some Japanese people wore hazmat suits emblazoned with red nuclear symbols, a powerful reminder of the Fukushima disaster and the fact that Japan's gone fully non-nuclear since. As of two weeks ago, the country closed its …

The Cove Under New Ownership in Peekskill

The new owner is excited to make some changes that freshen up the waterfront restaurant.

With a few touch ups and renovations, Carmel businessman Patrick Rich believes The Cove, a 300-capacity restaurant and event venue on the Hudson River in Peekskill, will be the project he always wanted. “I plan to make this place what it always should have been,” said Rich, who was clean shaven and dressed in a pin striped suit and freshly pressed dress shirt, while giving a tour of The Cove on a hazy spring day. Rich knows that a restaurant is about more than food. He will not even consider opening a restaurant if the space does not meet his requirements for size, location and views. The Cove, a two-story building tucked in a small cove of the Hudson River with a beautiful view of the Hudson Highlands, meets all three requirements. Rich …

Yorktown Farmers' Market Opens on Saturday

Opening day is May 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the field behind the firehouse on Commerce Street.

The grand opening of the Yorktown Farmers' Market is finally here and will take place this Saturday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The farmers' market will take place at the field behind the Yorktown Heights Engine Co #1 firehouse at 1916 Commerce Street. The entrance is on Veteran’s Road. The field is run by donation, so the farmers' market will benefit by the rental fee paid by the market. Karen Symington Muendell, who will run the market along with Ed Muendell and Danielle Lewandowski through Maize Market Management Corp, said the farmers' market is designed to support and donate to local charities. It will also benefit and give exposure to the local farmers. Local vendors who will participate in the Farmers' Market are The Meadows Farm…

Astorino Welcomes Beach Boys Day to Westchester

The Beach Boys played the Westchester County Center on Tuesday.

County Executive Rob Astorino has declared May 15, 2012 as “Beach Boys Day” in Westchester and honored the legendary band from sunny California with a proclamation Tuesday afternoon just before their evening show at the Westchester County Center. “My parents, when I tell them about my job and who I meet, no excitement—but when I told them The Beach Boys and all of a sudden they are jumping down—‘Can we come? Can we come?'” said Astorino. The Beach Boys and the Westchester County Parks system are both celebrating their 50th anniversaries. The Beach Boys are currently on tour and will be releasing their newest album “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” in June. Astorino, who attended Tuesday's show, said this is the beginning of reviving the “…

Officials Send Out Crib Tent Recall Alert

The recall is nationwide.

Thousands of crib tents sold by several major retailers are being recalled due to a "serious safety risk," state and federal officials said Thursday. The state Department of Consumer Protection is alerting consumers about a nationwide voluntary recall announced by The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and five major retailers. Refunds will be made available to consumers who have purchased any of the recalled crib tents or play yard tents made by Tots in Mind, Inc., officials said. According to CPSC, infants and toddlers are at risk of serious injury or death due to strangulation and entrapment by the products, and agency officials are urging parents and caregivers to stop using these crib tents and play yard tents immediately. Do not…

Interns: Not Just for Coffee Anymore

The days of interns being office gophers are a thing of the past. Employers need to be aware of the rules for interns.

Need someone to do your filing, sort your mail, fetch your coffee and other grunt work? An unpaid intern is not the answer. Many may remember summer intern experiences where they had hoped to learn about business and a particular industry but instead spent their time being the office errand boy or girl. Woe to the company that tries that now. New federal guidelines for internships were released in 2010 in response to the uptick in the number of unpaid internships over the last few years. The concern was that some employers were bringing in unpaid labor to help them through tough economic times.    One of the issues is having unpaid interns perform tasks that displace paid workers. For example, if an intern performs work that the firm would…

POLL: Should Yorktown Enact a Plastic Bag Ban?

The City of Rye recently banned plastic bags at retailers. Should your village follow suit?

Residents in Rye are adjusting to a new law that went into effect earlier this week. Plastic shopping bags can no longer be handed out by merchants—an issue that has elicited mixed reactions from retailers and customers alike. Instead of using plastic bag, shoppers are now expected to bring their own reusable bags to stores. "Thick" plastic bags that are wider than 2.5 millimeters and considered reusable are also permitted. Rye is the first municipality in Westchester County to adopt the environmentally-conscious measure after a series of discussions last winter. Rye's City Council voted to adopt an modeled on a similar Connecticut law. Like us on Facebook | Follow us on Twitter | Sign up for our newsletter

The Legacy of Momma’s Sweet Potato Pie

Gay Wheeler-Smith and business partner Kecia Palmer-Cousins are keeping family tradition alive with their business G&K Sweet Foods.

As a little girl in the Bronx, Gay Wheeler-Smith loved watching her mother, grandma and Momma (great-grandmother) bake every kind of southern baked good you could name. Peach cobbler, apple pie, bread pudding and sweet potato pie are some that came to her mind recently. “All the grandchildren were always in the house but I think I was the one that really liked being in the kitchen with them to watch them cook and bake,” Wheeler-Smith said. Decades later and Wheeler-Smith, along with her friend and business partner Kecia Palmer-Cousins, have created a business based off of Momma’s sweet potato pie that they feel is an extension of their family values and traditions. Their business, G&K Sweet Foods, Legacy Licious, sells canned sweet potato …
