The budget passed in Tuesday's vote.
The Yorktown Central School District's 2012-13 budget was overwhelmingly approved by the voters today. According to District Clerk Rebecca Narvaez, it came in at 1,120 in favor and 502 against. The spending plan totals $92,175,000 with a budget-to-budget increase of 1.15 percent. It falls below the new state mandated property tax cap and is $908,000 below the cap allowance. The budget, which includes BOCES capital improvement project expenses, will raise taxes by 2.31 percent for the town of Yorktown taxpayers within the district, or the equivalent to $212.8 additional per year for the typical Yorktown homeowner, per $10,000 of assessed value. Current Yorktown school board members Jackie Carbone and Christine Montero, who were up for re-…

Between the raindrops, voters give the final word on a proposed $157 million spending plan
Lakeland school district residents turned out in small numbers through midday today to render judgment on a proposed $157 million budget and three vacancies on the board of education. Under gray skies, polls opened at 7 a.m. at the Van Cortlandtville Elementary School in Mohegan Lake and were scheduled, as rain fell intermittently, to remain open until 9 p.m. Besides the budget and board races, voters were being asked to approve a million-dollar bond to buy 13 new school buses. Kathy DeMaio, the district clerk, described turnout through the morning hours as "very light." A snapshot sampling of a handful of early voters found that with varying degrees of enthusiasm most of favored the budget. "Like most taxpayers, I’d like to see the tax …
The Yorktown Central School District's proposed 2012-2013 budget of $92 million is put to a public vote at Mohansic Elementary School on May 15.
Despite the rain, Yorktown residents came out to Mohansic Elementary School on Tuesday to vote on the Yorktown Central School District's budget for 2012-13. Voter turnout was "steady," according to district clerk Rebecca Narvaez and similar to last year's slower-than-average voter turnout. The residents who voted said they're concerned about increasing taxes and maintaining the school programs, but many felt education is a top priority for the community and approving the budget would be best for the children. "As long as my kids are in the district, I'm going to support it," said Steve Scanlon, who has two children attending Yorktown schools. "[The district seems] to have good leadership and I want what's best for the kids in the district…
Yorktown Ambulance Volunteer Corps volunteers teach Yorktown High School students how to perform Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
You never know whose life you could save with your own hands. Yorktown Ambulance Volunteer Corps volunteers believe everyone should know how to do CPR in case someone they love or even a stranger collapses. They taught 19 Yorktown High School students last week how to perform Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), an emergency procedure to manually preserve brain function until further measures are taken to restore blood circulation and breathing in a person in cardiac arrest. "It's good to know [CPR], it can't hurt, it can only help," said Rich Cariello, a YVAC volunteer for more than three decades. Timing is also critical, Cariello said. Someone who has had CPR performed on him or her immediately has much better chances of survival. …
